Honoring the Past with A Vision of the Future

Nestled in the rolling hills of the northeast corner of Nebraska is St. Augustine Indian Mission and School. St. Augustine Indian Mission has served the Native American people of the Winnebago and Omaha Tribes since 1909. Through the years, it has touched the lives of thousands of Native American children and impacted the lives of their families.

Who We Serve - St. Augustine Indian MissionBackground

Out of 72 Catholic schools in the Omaha Archdiocese, St. Augustine Indian Mission is the only school created to serve the needs of the Native American students in our Nebraska community.

St. Augustine Indian Mission was founded in 1909 by St. Katharine Drexel and is the only Catholic institution in the state of Nebraska directly founded by a canonized saint. This Mission serves 105 students, kindergarten through eighth grade, from both the Omaha and Winnebago tribes.

Ninety-Five percent of our students are Native American, and the students are taught both Winnebago and Omaha languages along with their cultural heritage. St. Augustine is blessed to have a committed staff and Board of Advisors. The Mission is supervised under the auspices of the Archdiocese of Omaha. St. Augustine’s remains true to its Catholic heritage and welcomes students of all faiths.

The Omaha and Winnebago Community

Both Omaha and Winnebago tribes see high unemployment rates on the Reservations compared to the state of Nebraska and national statistics.

National unemployment rates are at about 4.9%, Nebraska is lower at 2.5%, but Winnebago experiences 18% unemployment and Omaha even more dire is at 78% unemployment rate. This is due to the fact that there are little-to-no business opportunities in the community and no access to public transportation.
